Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé has made one thing crystal clear: Yan Diomande transfer talk can wait. Despite swirling reports linking the RB Leipzig teenager with moves to Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, Faé insists his 19-year-old winger is laser-focused on the World Cup — and nothing else.
Yan Diomande Transfer Buzz Grows After Ecuador Masterclass
Diomande announced himself on the biggest stage in Sunday’s Group E opener, tormenting Ecuador throughout and creating a match-high five goalscoring chances for his teammates. He completed four dribbles — second only to match-winner Amad Diallo — and touched the ball more than any other Ivorian player. His direct opponent? Piero Hincapié, the Arsenal full-back and Champions League finalist. Diomande made him look ordinary.
Inevitably, the performance poured fuel on an already raging transfer fire. Faé, speaking after the 90th-minute victory secured by Amad, couldn’t help but laugh at the relentless speculation. “When we were in France during preparation, journalists told me he was about to sign with PSG,” he said. “Here, they tell me he’s about to sign with Liverpool! I don’t know, but for now, he will focus on the World Cup, and then afterwards, he can think about the rest of his career.”
Furthermore, Faé waxed lyrical about the youngster’s character, not just his ability. “He’s very talented, but beyond the talent, he’s very young and he’ll improve. He’s a kid who works hard, has real team spirit, listens to the technical staff and tries to do his best. It’s easy to work with someone like Yan.”

Diomande was among 26 Ivorian players experiencing their first-ever World Cup match — the nation’s first appearance at the tournament since 2014. Understandably, it wasn’t always pretty. Ecuador dominated large spells of a nervy first half, and Faé admitted as much. “It’s the first World Cup for all 26 players, so it was difficult — there was some doubt, some fear,” he conceded.
However, the Ivorians regrouped at the break and grew into the contest. “In the second half, we took more risks, were more concentrated and made fewer individual mistakes,” Faé explained. “We have great attacking players like Yan and Amad — they got more on the ball, pushed Ecuador back, and we managed to hurt them.” That ruthlessness ultimately paid off when Amad struck in injury time to seal all three points.
Ivory Coast now face a stern test in their second Group E fixture — Germany, who demolished Curaçao 7-1 in their opener, in Toronto on Saturday. Their final group match follows against Curaçao in Philadelphia on 25th June. One thing is certain: if Diomande performs anything like he did against Ecuador, the Premier League rumour mill will go into complete overdrive.
