Ilia Topuria became the new featherweight champion at UFC 298, defeating Alexander Volkanovski. He’s now eyeing a match with Conor McGregor in Spain. The victory came with a second-round knockout in Anaheim’s Honda Center. Topuria called on Dana White to host a UFC event in Spain and challenged McGregor.
Ilia Topuria, previously undefeated with a 14-0-0 record, started strong. He landed effective low kicks and right hands. Volkanovski won the first round, but Topuria’s strikes were a constant threat. His right hand in round two clinched his win.
Topuria expressed joy post-fight. He highlighted his hard work and determination. “Just trust yourself and work hard,” he said, celebrating his title.
Volkanovski faced his second straight knockout loss, after losing to Islam Makhachev at UFC 294. The ex-featherweight champion since 2019 praised Topuria’s power. He’s open to a rematch in Spain.
UFC 298 also featured close wins for Robert Whittaker and Ian Garry.
