Ilia Topuria Vows Rematch After Justin Gaethje Stops Him at UFC 250

Ilia Topuria has broken his silence following a brutal defeat to Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday, and true to his character, the former lightweight champion isn’t hiding from it. In a heartfelt Instagram post on Monday, Topuria acknowledged everything — and promised it isn’t over.

Ilia Topuria Addresses UFC Freedom 250 Defeat With Class and a Warning

Topuria (17-1) didn’t sugarcoat a single thing. He wrote that Gaethje had promised to leave his mark on his face — and delivered exactly that. Topuria revealed the vision in his right eye went in the first round, and by the end of the second, his left had gone too. His corner pulled him between the fourth and fifth rounds, ending the 155-pound title fight. “No excuses,” he wrote, adding that he’d had one of the best training camps of his career. He was sharp. He was ready. On the night, it simply wasn’t his time.

Furthermore, he made one thing crystal clear — this rivalry is nowhere near finished. “We will have our rematch,” Topuria stated flatly. That’s not desperation talking. That’s a man who knows exactly who he is.

Following the fight, Topuria was transported to hospital. However, his team moved quickly to reassure supporters. Iñigo Perez, speaking to ESPN, confirmed the Spaniard had been discharged on Monday. “He is OK,” Perez said. “Only injuries that need recovery time after a tough fight. He is out of the hospital, at home.”

Gaethje Stuns the Odds — and Considers His Next Move

Meanwhile, Justin Gaethje (28-5) pulled off one of the more remarkable upsets in recent UFC lightweight history. He walked into the fight as a significant betting underdog against a man who looked virtually untouchable at featherweight. Yet Gaethje, who had promised to “bring him down and remind him he’s human,” did precisely that. The pair had genuine animosity building towards fight night, though both men were notably respectful once the final bell had gone — a nod to what combat sport can be at its finest.

As for what comes next, Gaethje isn’t rushing anything. The 37-year-old revealed on Sunday that he’d made a promise to his mother not to make any immediate decisions about his future. Retirement on the back of a championship victory would be a storybook ending. But then again, fighters like Gaethje rarely close the book that easily. One thing is certain — Topuria will return. And when he does, the lightweight division had better be paying attention.
