Lewis Hamilton Title Threat Is Real, Warns Toto Wolff: ‘If He Smells Blood, He Goes’

Lewis Hamilton is a genuine championship contender — and nobody knows that better than the man who built him into a seven-time world champion. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has issued a stark warning ahead of the remaining 15 races this season, insisting his former driver remains a serious Lewis Hamilton title threat after taking his first Ferrari victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton Title Threat Grows After Barcelona Breakthrough

Hamilton crossed the line first in Spain to claim the first win of the 2025 season for any non-Mercedes driver. The result was made even sweeter by the timing — championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who took Hamilton’s seat at Mercedes last season, retired with a power unit failure after five consecutive victories. That retirement sliced into Antonelli’s advantage, and Hamilton now sits just 41 points off the top of the standings, with George Russell a further nine points back in third.

Wolff, speaking after the race, made no attempt to downplay what this result could mean. “I’d rather not fight with him for a title, because I know what he’s capable of,” he admitted. “If he smells blood, he goes. I’ve seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go and then it’s very difficult to stop it.”

That is not the kind of assessment you dismiss lightly. This is a man who watched Hamilton dismantle championships from the inside for over a decade.

Wolff Credits Hamilton’s Ferrari Form to Personal and Professional Harmony

So what has changed for Hamilton in 2025? Wolff, who shared a close bond with his former driver across 12 years at Mercedes, pointed to several factors behind the turnaround. He suggested the current generation of Ferrari machinery — more conventional aerodynamically and dynamically compared to the notoriously stiff, bouncing cars of the recent era — suits Hamilton’s feel for a car far better.

Furthermore, Wolff hinted that Hamilton’s personal life has played a part. With a barely concealed nod to Hamilton’s relationship with Kim Kardashian, the Mercedes boss said: “Maybe the girlfriend helps! It helped me to have a partner that — you know, you have a stable family life and they seem to be getting on really well.”

He went on: “The emotional and personal and professional perspective — if they are in a good place, you win.” The connection between Hamilton and his race engineer also drew praise, with Wolff noting the body language on the podium spoke volumes. “That face shows me that he’s very happy,” he said.

As BBC Sport and Formula 1’s official site both noted, Sunday’s result blows the championship wide open. With a DNF already costing Antonelli 25 points in one afternoon, Wolff’s message to his own team was blunt: “We can’t afford to not finish.” Hamilton, meanwhile, will not need telling twice.
