Former Premier League striker Rafa Mir has received an 8½-year prison sentence after a Spanish court found him guilty of sexual assault. The ruling, delivered on Monday, marks a seismic moment in a case that has cast a dark shadow over the 28-year-old’s football career.
Rafa Mir Sexual Assault Sentence: What the Court Decided
The Fourth Section of the Valencia Court handed down the sentence, confirming that Mir — currently on loan at LaLiga side Elche from Sevilla — must serve eight and a half years in prison. He will also pay €64,000 in compensation to the victim. Crucially, however, the sentence is not yet final. Mir took to Instagram almost immediately, stating: “I do not agree with the ruling and we will appeal in the coming days. I still have faith in the justice system.”
Mir’s co-accused, fellow footballer Pablo Jara, received a two-year sentence for sexual assault, plus an additional six months for an offence against moral integrity, and faces a €6,280 fine. Jara was registered with lower-division club Alcantarilla FC at the time of the incident.
Arrests, the Hearing and Mir’s Career Background
Both men were arrested in September 2024 after two women accused them of sexual assault at Mir’s residence. The case went to a widely reported one-day trial on 28 May, during which Mir maintained that the sexual relations were consensual. At the time of the alleged offences, Mir was on loan at Valencia from Sevilla, while Jara was at Alcantarilla.
Mir is no stranger to English football fans. The striker had spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest before his career moved back to Spain. A former Spain under-21 and under-23 international, he came through the ranks at Valencia and also represented Las Palmas and Huesca during his domestic career.
Furthermore, with an appeal now confirmed, this case is far from over. Whatever the final outcome, the fallout from these proceedings will follow Mir — and the game — for a long time to come.
