GB ice hockey suffered a bruising start to their IIHF World Championship campaign, going down 5-2 to Austria in Zurich in what many had pencilled in as one of the more winnable fixtures on the schedule.
GB Ice Hockey Rocked Early as Austria Strike Three Times in Ten Minutes
Pete Russell’s side were behind before they’d barely drawn breath. Ben Nissner opened the scoring inside three minutes, and Peter Schneider doubled the lead on the six-minute mark. Then, just before the ten-minute mark, Paul Huber made it three at 9:47 — and GB were already staring down a mountain. It was a nightmare opening period by anyone’s measure, and Austria looked utterly ruthless in their execution.
To their credit, though, GB refused to fold. David Clements and Liam Kirk struck just 37 seconds apart to drag the score back to 3-2, suddenly making a game of it. For a brief moment, Zurich held its breath.
Austria Pull Clear as GB Fail to Find a Way Back in Final Stanza
Unfortunately, the momentum didn’t last. Schneider struck again 6:43 into the second period to restore the two-goal cushion, before Leon Wallner twisted the knife with just over six minutes remaining in the middle frame — making it 5-2 and effectively ending the contest.
Despite a couple of powerplay opportunities for each side in the final period, neither team could add to the scoreline. Austria ran out comfortable three-goal winners, outshooting GB by a significant margin of 33-20. That shot differential tells its own story — GB were outplayed for long stretches, and Austria were simply the more clinical side on the night.
It’s a difficult result to swallow, particularly given what’s at stake. GB will be desperate to respond, and fans will want to see a much sharper performance in the games that follow.
